TOURS & EDUCATION

The Catalina Island Museum offers a variety of programs to engage and enrich adults, children and groups.  Take a tile walking tour, bring your class for a visit or come to a lecture on one of the many exciting aspects of Catalina history. 

 

Jewels of Avalon Tile Walking Tour —  Explore Avalon's numerous historic, reproduction, and contemporary tile installations with a knowledgeable Museum Docent as your guide.  Tours begin at the Museum, where you can view our extensive collection of  Catalina tile and pottery and learn about the history of tile manufacturing on the Island before heading out to see the colorful tile installations around town.  The tour is based on the popular book, the Jewels of Avalon by Larry Harris.  Tour averages one hour and is flat, easy walking — wear comfortable shoes!   (Not recommended for young children.)

Price:  $10 Adults, $8 Museum Members and children under 16.   

Price includes your Museum admission for the day.

Time:  Every Wednesday and Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Reservations are recommended.  Private group tours can be arranged with advanced notice (two- week lead time recommended).

NEW OFFERING!

Lectures — The Museum hosts evening lectures several times throughout the year but for a modest fee we can bring the lecture to you!  Whether on-island or mainland, our Speakers Bureau will travel to your location and deliver a 30-60 minute lecture and PowerPoint slide show at your venue.  Topics immediately available include:

~ Catalina's Steamship Era
~ Paradise on Fire: Catalina's Fires of 1915 and 2007
~ Pottery & Tile of the Magic Isle
~ Hurray for Hollywood: Catalina's Hollywood Era
~ Creating the Isle of Romance: The Development of the Island Into a World Renown Resort Destination

Summer Arts & Crafts Program — This summer the Museum is offering a special FREE Arts & Crafts program four days a week.  Children visiting the Museum's Arts & Crafts table (on Crescent Ave. near the Cabrillo Fountain) will have the opportunity express their creativity while creating projects inspired by Catalina's fascinating history.  Activities include coloring Catalina tiles, assembling puzzles of historic Avalon scenes, making souvenir postcards, and creating colorful visors.  There is no fee to participate in this new program which has been generously sponsored by Museum Benefactor Blanny Avalon Hagenah.

School Classes —  We love to share Catalina’s history with kids of all ages.  Call ahead to arrange a visit.  Our trained docents can present a unit to your class or assist your students during a more informal visit.  We also have questionnaires already prepared if you’d like to give your students a worksheet tailor-made for our exhibits.  Call to book your class at 310-510-2414 or contact us via email

 

 

 

Private Groups —  A variety of events can be arranged for your group.  A private walking tour through Avalon or a lecture on a specific topic at the museum or your venue, even small receptions can be booked at the Museum.  Please contact us to discuss your needs!
