"Transmitted and Delivered at the Sender's Risk" These sticky notes celebrate the history of the Catalina Island Homing Pigeon service, inspired by the artifacts in our collection.
In 1894, the Catalina Island Homing Pigeon Service celebrated it's opening day, offering messages that could be sent from Avalon to the mainland. The pigeons could make the flight in less than an hour and for seven years were the fastest means of communication between the island and the mainland.
The pigeon at the bottom of the notepad is Orlando, who, at one time, held the record for the fastest flight to the mainland at only 54 minutes!
