This large fluted low bowl was made from a mold used in Gladding McBean & Co.'s Avalon Art Ware, Aurora Art Ware and Catalina Art Ware. This piece is very versatile and can be used in a table setting, or be put on display.
The satin coral color indicates that it was a part of the Catalina Art Ware line, but since the mold was also used for the Avalon and Aurora Art Ware, we know it was produced with a mold made from the island, since no new pieces were created for those lines.
A very nice look is to pair a piece like this with another smaller vase or sculpture piece, and to stack the piece inside the bowl, or to display the bowl vertically in a small easel with the sculpture or vase in front of it.
Gladding McBean & Co. started by producing terra cotta building supplies and garden ware in 1873. They moved into tableware and acquired several West Coast pottery companies. They bought Catalina Island Pottery in 1937 and used their molds to produce their own Catalina Pottery line until 1942.
